The present disclosure relates to grinding apparatus for grinding the hard metal inserts of rock drill bits, said grinding apparatus having said grinding machine equipped with a grinding cup driven by a motor to rotate about its longitudinal axis wherein the support system comprises an arm or lever system to control vertical movement of the grinding machine and means to provide grinding pressure, wherein the means to provide grinding pressure may be a linear actuator and load cell assembly pivotally connected to the arm or lever system.

A method for manufacturing a drill bit (1), wherein in a first step the chip flutes (12) are ground into a round rod, in a second step the round rod is ground down to its outer diameter (15, 16) with simultaneous grinding of the drill-bit back (13), and wherein in a third step the drill-bit front (4) is ground, and a drill bit (1) having at least one chip flute (12) and one secondary cutting edge and one drill-bit back (13) adjoining the secondary cutting edge, the drill-bit back (13) sloping downwards as the distance from the secondary cutting edge increases, in order to create a clearance that becomes continuously larger as the distance from the point of intersection (19) of the secondary cutting edge with the drill-bit back (13) increases.

A device for sharpening a twist drill pointby means of a rotating grindstone (12) in a grinding machine comprises a base plate (14) lockably articulated around an axis parallel with the axis of the grindstone (12), a drill holder (16) for releasably holding a twist drill (1) to be sharpened, and a guide member (15). The guide member has a back plate (21) and a front plate (22), lockably rotatable in relation to each other. The back plate (21) is connected to the base plate (14) for movements in the direction of the grindstone axis, and the front plate (22) has guide means (28, 29) for slidably guiding the drill holder (16) in the general direction towards and away from the grindstone (12).

The invention concerns a method for grinding button drill bits, in which an abrasive wheel is used to restore the original form of a button in a button drill-bit. The grinding is carried out according to the invention at a temperature in the grinding region of approximately 250-700 °C. The invention concerns also an arrangement for the grinding of button drill-bits in which an abrasive wheel is used to restore the original form of a button in the button drill-bit, which abrasive wheel is provided with upright side flanges and an intermediate groove, where the arrangement comprises an arrangement for directing a stream of a cooling agent onto the side flanges and groove of the abrasive wheel. The invention concerns also an abrasive wheel that comprises diamonds with a mean particle size of 200 μm or greater, embedded in a matrix.

A drill sharpener is provided which has a point-splitting port which simplifies the procedure for producing a split point on a drill bit (200) undergoing sharpening. The point-splitting port (40) is positioned relative to a grinding wheel assembly (14) such that, when the drill held by a chuck (100) that is advanced toward the grinding wheel, a flute of the drill at the drill tip is brought into contact with the grinding wheel. The port has alignment stops (42) therein which mate with flats provided on the barrel of the chuck to ensure proper alignment of the chuck and drill relative to the grinding wheel. The stops also limit the extent of inward travel of the chuck and drill to a predetermined distance. A debris or grit collection tube (60) is also provided to be inserted into an unused port of the drill sharpener, to contain and confine any debris or grit attempting to exit the sharpener through the unused port.

According to the invention, the device (1) has a support surface (10) having guiding elements (11; 16) wherein at least two positioning elements (13, 14) are arranged such that their position can be altered and wherein said positioning elements can be fixed, the at least two positioning elements (13, 14) hereby forming a limiting stop for the tool (S) to be post-processed.

A precision drill sharpener and grinding wheel assembly is provided, as is a corresponding drill chuck for use with the drill sharpener, in which the drill sharpener includes a lever and spring clip alignment subassembly for properly positioning a drill in the drill chuck, and sharpening ports for sharpening the drill and splitting the drill tip, the sharpening ports being positioned such that a single grinding wheel assembly is used to both sharpen the drill and split the tip. The drill sharpener uses a small diameter grinding wheel operated at high speed to provide cutting rates comparable to large industrial sharpeners. The drill chuck is of short length, relative to most of the drills to be sharpened, and is open at a back end, enabling the manipulation of the drill by its shank relative to the drill chuck when disposed in the alignment subassembly. 00000
