    Abstract: Fastenings, including stretchy or flexible "zebra-like" and "leopard-like" appearing materials, are disclosed having spaced bands or a distribution islands of molded loop-engageable hooks or molded pre-forms for hooks, between which are bands or regions of different character. Molding is by rigid molds filled from the base region of the stems. In embodiments, linear bands or islands of fastener elements are themselves inextensible in the direction of their extent and comprise multiple rows of fastener elements. For ease of forming a uniform, elastically stretchy or flexible product, the bands or islands of fastener elements extend in the machine direction during manufacture. Embodiments shown employ a widthwise continuous carrier of uniform character to which multiple spaced bands or islands of hooks have their molded stems in situ bonded, and in other embodiments, over-lapping margins of the bases of hook bands are in situ laminated to surface structure of adjacent bands of carrier using a laminating nip in which one of the rolls is a mold roll. For a preferred mode of manufacture of an elastically stretchy product, stretchy carrier material is stretchy only in the widthwise (cross-machine) direction. In composite hook and loop fastener products, the bands or regions of material between adjacent bands or islands of hooks comprise loop-engageable material, that is uniform in construction widthwise, the loop-forming material itself being an elastically stretchable or a flexible component. In useful product categories, the hook bands or islands and intervening regions of material have importantly different width ranges. Novel elastically stretchable and flexible loop-defining materials, and their methods of manufacture are shown. In situ lamination of hook, bands or islands on surfaces of materials held in a planar orientation or presenting a planar surface are also shown, flexible materials on tenter frames and rigid materials.

    Abstract: An easy-to-grip diaper fastener tab has an array of hook-shaped fastener elements arranged in parallel rows, each fastener element including a stem and a crook extending from the stem in a predetermined direction to a distal tip. The array includes a plurality of rows of fastener elements arranged such that, in each row, all of the crooks face in the same direction and parallel to the direction of the row, with the crooks of adjacent rows facing in opposite directions. The longitudinal spacing between opposing tips of adjacent hooks of adjacent rows is greater in a first portion of the array than the longitudinal spacing between opposing tips of adjacent hooks of adjacent rows in a second portion of the array, such that the crooks of the hooks of the first portion are more exposed for engaging loops than the crooks of the hooks of the second portion. Methods and molds for forming such arrays are also provided.

    Abstract: A running length of fastener product (10) is formed of longitudinally pre-oriented synthetic resin. The product is characterized by a base web and an array of discrete fastener elements (A) protruding from at least one side of the web (12) being in a laterally stretched molecular oriented condition. After forming a preform having discrete fastener elements (11) integral with a base web (12) in a stretchable state, the preform is stretched in a manner that substantially increases the fastener element spacing and reduces the thickness of the base web (12). A machine (40) is shown that is capable of lengthwise orienting before forming and widthwise stretching after forming, which employs controlled heating to render the product widthwise stretchable while preserving or achieving a desired shape of the fastener elements (11). There are shown fastener products (10) that include products that are laterally stretched to between two and ten times the width of the original preform fastener products (10), having lateral rip resistance due to molecular orientation of film form webs (12) produced by stretching, applied to complex or extensive surfaces.     Abstract: A very small, molded, hook-shaped fastener member (12) features an integrally-formed pedestal (13) and crook. In side profile, the pedestal (13) forms a truncated pyramid. Projections of leading (17) and trailing (18) edges of the pedestal intersect near the top of the hook, and at least 40 % of the crook projects laterally from the pedestal. Preferably the fastener member has an overall height of less than about 0.025 inch and a displacement volume of less than about 1.0 x 10 cubic inches. The mold (80) for forming the fastener member has non-moving mold surfaces that define contiguous pedestal chambers (P) and crook chambers (C). The pedestal chamber is shaped to allow the member to return to its original shape as it is pulled out of cavity (1) before it is completely removed from the cavity. In some embodiments, cut-outs in at least three adjacent plates are aligned to define the mold cavity. Methods of forming the very small mold cavities are also included.
