Abstract:
A plurality of hybrid mail jobs from one or more sources are received at a hybrid mail facility in the form of sets of variable data. The variable data are merged with designated fixed data to produce a plurality of individual print files containing page images to be printed. The individual print files are electronically commingled (209) to produce a single commingled print file containing multiple mail jobs. Presorting (211) is performed to order the commingled print file in accordance with sorting criteria. Before production of the finished mail pieces, the commingled print file, if necessary, is divided into a plurality of divided print files corresponding to different classes requiring different printer and/or automated inserter set-ups (213).
Abstract:
The present invention provides systems and methods for processing foreign origin parcels through Customs and individuals through security checkpoints. The system (70) includes a database (74) having data records associated with each foreign origin parcel or individual. Associated with the database (74) is a processor (72) having a search engine for performing searches in the data records based on criteria selected by a user. The system (70) allows the user to store notes taken during inspection so that the information related to the inspection can be electronically archived.
Abstract:
The present invention is generally directed to systems and methods to provide a user with visibility to packages that are inbound to and outbound from the user. A preferred embodiment describes a subscription system that allows the user to determine the frequency and format of package visibility information, and various tools are disclosed to automate and customize the presentation of package visibility information to the user.
Abstract:
An aircraft surveillance system that includes an uninterruptible aircraft information broadcasting system (such as an ADS-B system) for transmitting flight information from an aircraft, and one or more ground stations for receiving the broadcast flight information. The flight information preferably includes the aircraft's aircraft ill, current three-dimensional position, and intended path. Optional components according to the invention include a system and method for validating messages received from the aircraft, and an alternative system and method for determining the aircraft's position if a primary navigation aid, such as GPS, is not available. In one embodiment of the invention, the system includes a transmitter and an uninterruptible power supply that are disposed within a secure housing within the aircraft. This serves to prevent passengers and crew members from disabling the system.
Abstract:
An international cash-on-delivery (I-COD) system (10) for completing a transaction between a seller (16) in a first country and a purchaser (17) in a second country, wherein the seller has agreed to exchange packaged goods for a payment from the purchaser. The international delivery system includes a delivery service system (20, 21), a payment system (12, 27, 28) and an information system (13). The delivery service system physically handles delivery of the packaged goods, including import and export clearing, and holding of the packaged goods in escrow at an intermediate location until payment by the purchaser. The payment system handles the flow of funds including receiving payment from the purchaser, holding the payment in escrow and distribution of the payment to the seller upon delivery of the packaged goods. The information system (13) electronically coordinates escrow aspects of both the delivery service system, and the payment system, so as to minimize the risk of the transaction to both the seller and the purchaser.
Abstract:
The present invention is an improved shipping system that provides for third-party billing and shipment of a package from a first location to a second location where neither the first or second location is the location of the third-party. An embodiment is disclosed in which a pre-existing call-tag system is modified to permit third-party billing and anywhere to anywhere functionality.
Abstract:
An unsymmetrical elliptical reflector for spatial illumination. The invention includes a novel reflector and a novel illumination system including the novel reflector. The novel reflector (26) includes first (27) and second (29), non-symmetrical, elliptical elongate reflector surfaces. The eccentricities of the first and second reflector surfaces are different such that they have common first foci (30) and different conjugate foci (32, 34). The novel illumination system incorporates the novel reflector and provides intense, focused illumination at two foci (32, 34) positioned at two heights above a conveyor surface (12). The illumination intensity between the two foci is sufficiently intense to provide adequate illumination of encoded labels (16) carried on package (14) surfaces at heights between the two foci.
Abstract:
The invention is a method and apparatus to restore the obscured poriton of an image of a sequence of characters or other patterns in the presence of superimposed lines. The character restoration is accomplished by means of two kinds of statistical information, the frequency of occurrence of image pixel value observations on either side of the obscuring line and the frequency of occurrence of character slice transitions within the width of the obscuring line. This statistical information is organized as a Hidden Markov Model. Having estimated the model's probabilities, the Viterbi algorithm is then employed to determine the optimal restoration across the length of the line. Two tasks are performed prior to the character restoration. First the Hidden Markov Model is trained. This task involves scanning across sequences of characters to estimate both observation and tansition probabilities. Model construction is done off-line and typically only once. Prior to the run-time character restoration, the line itself is located using a modified version of the Hough transform. Local eigenfits are employed to reduce the necessary computation.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a system and method for coordinating maintenance, or other activities, for a plurality of motor vehicles, or other objects of a type subject to repeated need for the activities. The system utilizes an intelligent, hand-held, portable data entry and data processing device to display a schedule of activities for a plurality of objects as a menu of choices for selection, to store a record of activity for a selection, and to transmit the record of activity to update a database for the objects.
Abstract:
A method and apparatus for characterizing the performance of either a printer used to print a two-dimensional symbol or an imaging system used to generate a gray-scale image of the printed symbol. After the image is generated, an acquisition target of the symbol is located. The quality of the acquisition target is characterized by thresholding the gray-scale image, run-length encoding the resulting binary image, and computing the correlation coefficient between the run-length-encoded image and a run-length-encoded representation of a defined acquisition target. In addition, the histogram of the gray-scale image is generated and certain histogram-based quality measures are computed. The fast Fourier transform of the gray-scale image is also generated and certain hexagon-position quality measures are computed.
