Abstract: Multi-cavity injection molding apparatus includes a plurality of injection nozzles, each of which has a two-piece tip assembly in the nature of a replaceable tip and a retainer that detachably secures the tip to the nozzle body. The retainers are constructed from material having a lower coefficient of thermal conductivity than the tips so that the retainers also serve to insulate the tips from the relatively cold, surrounding heat sink presented by the mold. Although each retainer prevents its tip from being unintentionally axially released from the nozzle body, the retainer engages the tip at only two axially spaced locations along its length so as to present an insulating air gap in surrounding relationship to much of the tip. The otherwise exposed end of the air gap is sealed off when the nozzle is hot by virtue of a sealing collar on the retainer that progressively tightens against the cooperating, beveled surface of the tip as the tip heats up. Each nozzle is mounted on the manifold block in a ball and socket relationship so that the nozzles can swivel and self-align as the manifold block and nozzles heat up from room temperature to operating temperature at the commencement of the injection process.

Abstract: An injection molding apparatus and method are provided in which the rate of material flow during an injection cycle is controlled. According to one preferred embodiment, an injection molding apparatus is provided that includes a manifold (231), at least one injection nozzle (215) coupled to the manifold, an actuator, and a valve pin (200) adapted to reciprocate through the manifold and the injection nozzle. The valve pin (200) has a first end coupled to the actuator, a second end that closes the gate (211) in a forward position, and a control surface (205) intermediate said first and second ends for adjusting the rate of material flow during an injection cycle. Retracting the valve pin tends to decrease the rate of material flow during the injection cycle and displacing the valve pin toward the gate (211) tends to increase the rate of material flow during the injection cycle.

Abstract: A hot runner mould for injection moulding multilayered mouldings by simultaneously injecting various plastic melts into several cavities has a hot runner block (23a-c) slidingly supported between a top plate (21) at the side of the extruder and a hot runner plate (22) at the side of the cavities. A joining piece (24) firmly secured to said hot runner block is coupled to a feed bush (12) slidingly mounted on the top plate (21).
