    Abstract: A lateral retractor system for forming a surgical pathway to a patient's intervertebral disc space includes a single dilator and a retractable dual-tapered-blade assembly. The single dilator may feature a narrow rectangular body for insertion at an insertion orientation parallel to the fibers of the patient's psoas muscle and at an approximate 45-degree angle to the patient's spine. The retractable dual-tapered-blade assembly consists of only two blade subassemblies, each having a blade bordered by adjustable wings, along with built-in lighting and video capabilities. The dual-tapered-blade assembly may be passed over the single dilator at the insertion orientation and rotated approximately 45-50 degrees from the insertion orientation to a final rotated orientation parallel to the intervertebral disc space before the two blade subassemblies are retracted away from one another to create the surgical pathway. Other embodiments are also disclosed.

    Abstract: Various exemplary methods and devices are provided for the removal and retention of bone screw rod reduction tabs extending from one or more bone screws implanted in a spinal column during a surgical procedure. In one embodiment, a removal and retention tool is provided having an elongated shaft with a channel formed therein that is configured to receive a rod reduction tab. The elongate shaft can be advanced over a rod reduction tab on a screw, and moved laterally to detach the reduction tab from the screw. The tool can include features to engage and retain the detached tab within the channel. Moreover, the tool can be configured to receive and retain multiple tabs, thus eliminating the need to remove the tool from a surgical site. The tool can also include a release actuator for releasing any tabs stored within the elongate shaft as may be needed.

    Abstract: Surgical instruments, methods, and systems are provided for securing spinal fixation elements to bone. For example, a spinal fixation system is provided that has a receiver with proximal and distal ends. The proximal end of the receiver is configured to receive various fixation members, such as spinal rods and set screws, therein. The distal end of the receiver has a hook member that is operably coupled thereto and has an opening that is configured to receive bone therein. The hook member is configured to be secured to bone without penetrating the bone.

A base is connectable with the first member and engageable with the first band. The base defines a second groove and a slot.     Abstract: An implant (10) for spinal facet joint stabilization comprises a wedge (12) and plate (14) adapted to accept prongs (67, 68) of a surgical instrument (60) for installing the implant into a posterior spinal facet joint. The wedge has an anterior end with a threaded bore (39). A notch (55, 57) in each lateral side (47, 48) of the plate aligns with a groove (40, 41) in each lateral side (35, 36) of the wedge. Each notch and groove pair receives a prong of the surgical instrument to hold the wedge and plate during implantation. A superior tube of the surgical instrument supports a superior rod having an end configured for installing a bone screw attaching the plate to the superior vertebra of the spinal facet joint. An inferior tube of the surgical instrument supports an inferior rod having an end configured to attach to the threaded bore of the wedge along with the plate during introduction of the implant into the spinal facet joint, and installing the set screw to attach the plate to the wedge.

    Abstract: A rod reducer designed to deliver a set screw by way of a decoupled ram and driver shaft. The driver shaft secures and delivers the set screw while the ram applies the load to the rod for reduction. By separating the ram and driver, the rod is reduced down below the start of the female threads, allowing for the set screw to be started by the driver, avoiding binding and additional steps.
