Abstract:
A hydraulic machine in which the volume of working fluid displaced by each cylinder is selectable on each cycle of working chamber volume by active control of one or more electronic valves has a controller configured to select specified groups of cylinders to repetitively carry out active cycles until a change in selection is made. The groups are selected to reduce torque ripple and/or bearing side load. The cam profile may be varied to further reduce torque ripple.
Abstract:
A wind turbine generator (100), or other energy extraction device, has a hydraulic circuit comprising a hydraulic pump (129) driven by a rotating shaft (125) and a hydraulic motor (131) driving an electricity generator (157), or other load. A high pressure manifold (133) extending between the pump and motor is in communication with an accumulator (145, 147, 149). A controller receives a control signal and regulates the displacement of working fluid by the hydraulic pump and the hydraulic motor relative to each other. Thus, power input through the rotating shaft and output to the load can be decoupled for at least a period of time and the energy output of energy extraction device can be varied, for example to smooth the total power output to an electricity grid (101), without compromising power input. A group of energy extraction devices can be controlled in concert to maximise power input while providing smooth power output. Individual electricity generators in different energy extraction devices can be switched on and off in concert to provide smooth power output while benefiting from the reduced energy losses that can be obtained by switching off electricity generators where possible.
Abstract:
A fluid-working machine has a working chamber of cyclically varying volume, high and low pressure manifolds, and high and low pressure valves for regulating the flow of fluid between the working chamber and the high and low pressure manifolds respectively. A controller actively controls at least one said valve to determine the net displacement of working fluid of the working chamber on a cycle by cycle basis. At least one said valve is a variable timing valve and the controller causes the valve to open or close at a time determined taking into account one or more properties of the performance of the fluid working machine measured during an earlier cycle of working chamber volume. Properties of the opening or closing of a monitored valve may be taken into account. The variably timed valve may therefore be opened or closed at an optimum time to achieve efficient and reliable operation of the fluid- working machine. The magnitude of the opening or closing force applied to a valve member may also be varied.
Abstract:
The present invention relates to a method of operating a fluid-working machine wherein the volume of working fluid displaced each cycle is selectable and wherein the volume of working fluid displaced by a first working chamber takes into account the suitability of the working chamber to displace fluid. The invention extends in further aspects to power absorbing structures such as renewable energy devices comprising such fluid working machines. The invention allows the operation of fluid working machines and power absorbing structures which are more long lived.
Abstract:
An electronically actuatable valve assembly having a primary face seating valve, including a primary valve member, and a secondary valve, including a secondary valve member. The secondary valve opens before the primary valve to equilibrate pressure across the primary valve member and thereby facilitate opening of the primary valve member. The secondary valve is coupled to an armature which moves from a first position to a second position, in use, attracted by an electromagnet. The coupling between the armature and the secondary valve is configured to enable the armature to begin to move from the first position without movement of the secondary valve. The armature has therefore moved from the first position, closer to the electromagnet, when the secondary valve is opened by way of the forces exerted through the coupling between the armature and the secondary valve member, and so a greater force can be exerted to open the secondary valve than would be the case if the secondary valve member was fixedly coupled to the armature.
Abstract:
The invention relates to a fluid distribution valve (1, 25, 29, 37, 43), comprising at least a first fluid port (2), a second fluid port (3) and a third fluid port (4). These ports are connecting to a fluid distribution chamber (5). The second fluid port (3) can be selectively connected to the first fluid port (2) and/or the third fluid port (4) through said distribution chamber (5). The second fluid port (3) is arranged between the first fluid port (2) and the third fluid port (4).
Abstract:
A fluid working machine, operable to carry out a motoring cycle under at least some circumstances, comprises a controller (12) and a working chamber (2) of cyclically varying volume. The working chamber has a high pressure valve (18) associated therewith to control the connection of the working chamber to a high pressure manifold (20), and an electronically controllable primary low pressure valve (14) to control the connection of the working chamber to a low pressure manifold. The controller is operable to actively control at least the primary low pressure valve, in phased relationship to cycles of working chamber volume, to determine the net displacement of fluid by the working chamber on a cycle by cycle basis. The fluid working machine is adapted to release pressurised fluid from the working chamber prior to the opening of the primary low-pressure valve, during a motoring cycle. This facilitates the opening of the primary low pressure valve.
