Abstract: An apparatus for forming a three-dimensional article having successive layers of a powder material, which layers correspond to successive cross-sections of the three- dimensional article includes a process chamber that includes a process chamber floor having an opening therethrough, the opening defining a part processing area and a lid management system. The lid management system includes an actuator including a movable arm that moves between retracted and extended positions and a machine lid connected to the movable arm. The machine lid is sized and configured to sealingly engage a perimeter of the opening of the process chamber floor with the movable arm in the extended position.

Abstract: In embodiments, an additive manufacturing apparatus (100) comprises a chassis assembly and a skin at least partially covering the chassis assembly. The chassis assembly comprises a lower chassis section secured to a low voltage chassis section (608); an upper environmental chassis section (602) secured to and extending over the low voltage chassis section and the lower chassis section; a high voltage chassis section (606) secured to the upper environmental chassis section and the lower chassis section; and a build receptacle carriage (624) adjustably coupled to the lower chassis section. The skin comprises first and second doors providing access to the low voltage chassis section and the high voltage chassis section; a rear panel providing access to the upper environmental chassis section; a top panel covering a top of the upper environmental chassis section; and at least one hinged door providing access to the lower chassis section.

Abstract: An additive manufacturing apparatus includes a process chamber having a length, a support extending along the length of the process chamber, a printing assembly, a vision system configured to image a dispensed binder pattern, and an electronic control unit communicatively coupled to the printing assembly, the first actuator, and the vision system. The electronic control unit is configured to cause the printing assembly to traverse the build zone in a forward or reverse direction while dispensing binder according to a programmed deposition pattern, receive image data from the vision system of the dispensed binder pattern resulting from the programmed deposition pattern, analyze the image data to determine whether there is an anomaly in the dispensed binder pattern, and in response to determining the anomaly in the dispensed binder pattern, adjust the programmed deposition pattern for a subsequent traversal of the printing assembly over the build zone to address the anomaly.

Abstract: An actuator assembly for distributing build material and depositing binder material in an additive manufacturing apparatus may comprise an upper support and a lower support spaced vertically spaced from one another. A recoat head actuator may be coupled to a recoat head and one of the upper support and the lower support. The recoat head actuator may include a recoat motion axis. The recoat head actuator effects bi-directional movement of the recoat head on the recoat motion axis. A print head actuator may be coupled to a print head and the other of the upper support and the lower support. The print head actuator may include a print motion axis. The print head actuator effects bi-directional movement of the print head on the print motion axis. The recoat motion axis and the print motion axis are parallel to one another and spaced apart from one another in the vertical direction.

The control unit causes jet nozzles to dispense drops of binder (50) while the printing head traverses a first pass trajectory along the longitudinal axis in a first direction, indexes the printing head to a second pass trajectory along the latitudinal axis, and causes jet nozzles to dispense drops of binder while the printing head traverses the second pass trajectory along the longitudinal axis in a second direction.
