Es sind eine Reflexionslichtschranke mit einem Lichtsender zur Aussendung eines Sendelichtstrahls und einem Lichtempfänger für einen reflektierten Anteil des Sendelichtstrahls sowie ein weiterer Lichtempfänger für einen transmittierten Anteil des Sendelichtstrahls vorgesehen, wobei die Reflexionslichtschranke an dem Druckergehäuse und der weitere Lichtempfänger an dem Gehäuseelement oder der Kassette vorgesehen ist, oder umgekehrt, und wobei im geschlossenen Zustand des Gehäuseelements die Reflexionslichtschranke und der weitere Lichtempfänger auf zwei einander gegenüberliegenden Seiten des Papierpfads angeordnet sind. Eine Steuereinheit ist dazu ausgebildet, basierend auf einer gemeinsamen Auswertung der Empfangsintensität des Lichtempfängers der Reflexionslichtschranke sowie der Empfangsintensität des weiteren Lichtempfängers den Zustand des Etikettendruckers zu erfassen.
