The invention is directed to methods for producing a granular nitrogen fertilizer from an organic material comprising adding a metallic salt to said organic material to form a slurry. Preferably the organic material comprises dewatered biosolids and contains water from a scrubber. Metallic salts that can be used comprise a salt of iron, zinc, or a mixture thereof. Preferred iron salts comprises ferric sulfate or ferric oxide, and preferred zinc salts comprises zinc sulfate or zinc oxide. Preferably, the metallic salt is mixed with an acid such as sulfuric acid to form an acidified metal salt. Slurry pH ranges from approximately 2-2.5. The acidified metal salt is added to the organic material in sufficient quantity to lower viscosity of the slurry such that the resulting fluid does not hinder fluid flow during operation. When the metallic salt comprises acidified ferric sulfate or ferrous sulfate, sufficient iron can be present to produce a fertilizer product with 0.1 weight percent to 10 weight percent iron sulfate calculated on a dry weight basis. The invention is also directed to fertilizer products made by the methods of the invention. Preferred products are granules and the metallic salt increases product hardness. Fertilizer granules preferably contain metal that is bioavailable to a plant when used as a fertilizer. Solubility of the metal of the product in water is enhanced, and the product is low staining.

A highly porous substrate is provided using an extrusion system. More particularly, the present invention enables the production of a highly porous substrate. Depending on the particular mixture, the present invention enables substrate porosities of about 60% to about 90%, and enables advantages at other porosities, as well. The extrusion system enables the use of a wide variety of fibers and additives, and is adaptable to a wide variety of operating environments and applications. Fibers, which have an aspect ratio greater than 1, are selected according to substrate requirements, and are typically mixed with binders, pore-formers, extrusion aids, and fluid to form a homogeneous extrudable mass. The homogeneous mass is extruded into a green substrate. The more volatile material is preferentially removed from the green substrate, which allows the fibers to form interconnected networks. As the curing process continues, fiber to fiber bonds are formed to produce a structure having a substantially open pore network. The resulting porous substrate is useful in many applications, for example, as a substrate for a filter or catalyst host, or catalytic converter.

Methods and devices are provided for the extracorporeal ablation of target cells circulating in blood of an organism. Exogenous material introduced into the blood preferentially associates with target cells (e.g. cancer cells, bacteria, viruses) in the blood. An extracorporeal continuous flow pathway accesses the patient's blood to apply an external energy source to the blood at an ex vivo ablation device in a portion of the extracorporeal continuous flow pathway. The exogenous material interact with the applied energy so as to result in the damage or death of the target cells. The blood is then returned to the body in a continuous-flow pattern. By applying the energy while the blood is in the ex vivo ablation device, shielding of the target cells by the body is reduced and detrimental effects on the organs and tissues of the body are avoided or mitigated.

A method and system for providing a binary instrumentation tool to detect memory problems in a runtime application executing on a computer system includes identifying one or more functions or statements in the runtime application. A plurality of compiler annotations defining essential functional characteristic data of each of the plurality of functions is generated by a compiler when compiling the user program from source code to an executable binary code. A program error detector is configured to provide a checker code based on guidelines provided by of the plurality of compiler annotations associated with the function. The program error detector generates a modified function code for the identified function by inserting the checker code into a function code for the corresponding function. A modified executable binary code for the runtime application is then generated by replacing the function code for the function with the corresponding modified function code. When the modified executable binary code is run, the checker code associated with the function invokes a checker. The invoked checker provides performance data analysis that allows identification of program errors including memory errors in the runtime application.

A method and a system for transformation-based program generation using two separate specifications as input: An implementation neutral specification of the desired computation and a specification of the execution platform. The generated implementation incorporates execution platform opportunities such as parallelism. Operationally, the invention has two broad stages. First, it designs the abstract implementation in the problem domain in terms of an Intermediate Language (IL) that is unfettered by programming language restrictions and requirements. Concurrently, the design is evolved by specializing the IL to encapsulate a plurality of desired design features in the implementation such as partitioning for multicore and/or instruction level parallelism. Concurrently, constraints that stand in for implied implementation structures are added to the design and coordinated with other constraints. Second, the IL is refined into implementation code. With this invention, porting an implementation neutral computation to an arbitrary architecture can be automated.
