The non-wetting phase is displaced from the core sample by supplying the wetting phase at one end of the core holder. A saturation profile of the core sample is determined based on cross-sectional images of the core sample. A wettability index value is calculated at least based on a comparison of the saturation profile and the model of the core sample.

A preferred embodiment is through routine screening of platelet units in the hospital blood bank using dynamic light scattering and selective allocation of platelets, with non-activated platelets being exclusively transfused to thrombocytopenic patients, especially patients with cancers such as hematologic malignancies. Activated platelets typically contain activated factors of the innate immune system called complement, transforming growth factor beta (TGFβ), interleukin 6 (IL-6), CD40 ligand (CD40L) and C-reactive protein (CRP) for example. Some of these activated factors have already been shown to correlate with microparticles and others are expected to correlate: the higher the platelet activation the more microparticles and the higher the concentration of these factors. By transfusing only non-activated platelets, therapeutic outcomes are enhanced.

As the blades move from the retracted position, the blades have increasing exposure to ambient wind to receive additional rotational force from ambient wind, and the additional rotational force being sufficient to, either alone or in combination with the flow of current, move the blades into the fully deployed position.

Pre-conditioning a vaccine site with a potent recall antigen such as tetanus/diphtheria (Td) toxoid can significantly improve the lymph node homing and efficacy of tumor antigen-specific DC vaccines. Patients given Td had enhanced DC migration bilaterally and significantly improved survival. In mice, Td pre-conditioning also enhanced bilateral DC migration and suppressed tumor growth in a manner dependent on the chemokines CCL3 and CCL21 and Td-activated CD4+ T cells. Interference with any component of this axis markedly reduced Td-mediated DC migration and antitumor responses. Our clinical studies and corroborating investigations in mice suggest that pre-conditioning with a potent recall antigen represents a viable strategy to increase DC homing to lymph nodes and improve antitumor immunotherapy.
