The photomultiplier detects more alpha particles, but cannot distinguish the energies of different alpha particles. On the other hand, the photodiode can distinguish different decays because the magnitude of the signal generated by the photodiode is proportional to the kinetic energy of the alpha particle striking it. Thus, the photodiode produces spectral data. The spectral data is used to estimate the amount of Polonium that is adhering to aerosols. This is used to apply a correction factor to the data to provide a better estimate of the true Radon concentration in the chamber. This can be combined with the count data of the photomultiplier for overall improved data.

Third order elastic constants engender nonlinear excitation of acoustic modes particularly at points of local stiffness changes or stress concentration such as ends of microcracks. A broadband multimode acoustic signal is transmitted through an interrogation region from a first transducer, whereby a second transducer receives an acoustic signal containing linear and nonlinear components. Linear terms are canceled, and a magnitude of the nonlinear acoustic response is measured using time-resolved spectral analysis, to determine a coefficient for acoustic nonlinearity of the interrogation region that serves as a qualitative or quantitative representation of microcrack damage. Broadband signals avoid mode-specific effects such as shadowing or phase mismatch. Damage location can be identified by region or time-of-flight. Portable or dedicated embodiments can be deployed on a wide range of structures of arbitrary shape.

High-voltage DC power conversion and distribution circuitry improves the efficiency of VRE power transfer into the system.

The controller is operative to determine a water use condition responsive to a water usage pattern, and to cause at least one message to be sent to the portable user device responsive to the determined water use condition.

The method also includes recycling the water generated from the fuel cell stack to one or all of the acid aqueous solution tank, the dehydrogenation reactor, and a separate water tank. The acid is formic acid and, in in the dehydrogenation reactor, the temperature is in a range of 10° C. to 400° C. and the pressure is in a range of 1 bar to 100 bar.
