The novel compounds 2,2-bis-(bromomethyl)-propane-1,3-bis-(allylcarbonate) and 2,2-bis-(bromomethyl)-propane-1,3-bis-(methallylcarbonate):
(R = H or Me) are preparable by converting one of (a) CH 2 = CRCH 2 0H and (b) 2,2-bis(bromomethyl)-1,3-propane diol into a chloroformate by reaction with phosgene, and then reacting it with the other one. Alternatively diallyl or dimethallyl carbonate is transesterified with (b).
The compounds are flame-retardant reactive monomers which can be homo- or co-polymerised (e.g. with diallyl diglycol, acrylates or styrenes) to produce flame-retardant polymers.
