Methanol is dehydrated (10) to dimethyl ether which is catalytically converted into gasoline boiling-range components; the conversion catalyst is disposed in a plurality of reactors (20, 30) so arranged that each downstream reactor (30) can be operatively connected in series to the upstream reactor(s) once the catalyst in the immediately preceding upstream reactor (20) has reached a predetermined degree of deactivation.
