Methods of diagnosis are taught for multiple sclerosis. A viral agent is implicated in the disease and methods for identifying the virus and viral-infected cells are disclosed. Vaccines comprising viral proteins are presented The new virus is in the human retrovirus family known to cause both adult T-cell leukaemia and acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
