Compounds of the general formula (I),
wherein
R is hydrogen, halogen, C₁₋₄alkyl, C₁₋₄alkoxy or C₁₋₄acylamino group;
R₁ is hydrogen or a carboxyl-protective group; and
R₂ represents a -(CH₂) n -CO₂R₅ group, wherein
n is 1, 2, 3 or 4; and
R₅ is hydrogen or a carboxyl-protective group;
or
R₂ is a -(CH₂) n -NH₂ group, wherein
n is 1, 2, 3 or 4
in the E and/or Z configuration, as well as their salts, show a cytoprotective effect and promote the healing of stomach ulcers. Their toxicity is low.
