In an engine knock detection process, the knock threshold is weighted or limited. For that purpose, a normal range (NB) of the reference level is defined and when deviations from said normal range (NB) occur the knock threshold (KS) is multiplied by a weighting factor (WF) smaller than 1, or the knock threshold is limited when a predeterminable threshold value is reached.
