A method and apparatus for transmitting and receiving signals for at least four channels between a telephone company location and a customer premises over a single twisted pair. At least four signal sources output at least four signals to a central office terminal unit or line card at the telephone company location. The line card receives and converts the at least four signals into a 288 kbps multiplexed binary signal, converts the multiplexed binary signal into a 2B1Q or 4B3T signal for transmission to the customer premises over a single twisted pair for use by a remote terminal.
