An internal combustion engine (10) includes a cylinder block (12) with a cylinder bore (24). A cylinder head (14) is attached to the cylinder block (12) and covers the cylinder bore (24). A cylinder liner (16) within the cylinder bore (24) has a distal end (44), an inside diameter (58), and an annular recess (62) extending radially outwardly from the inside diameter (58) at the distal end (44). A piston (18) is reciprocally disposed within the cylinder liner (16). An annular scraping ring (20) positioned in the annular recess (62) has an inside diameter (64) which is smaller than the inside diameter (58) of the cylinder liner (16) and is configured to scrape deposits from the piston (18). The scraping ring (20) extends axially beyond the distal end (44) of the cylinder liner (16). An annular sealing ring (22) is separate from, located by and positioned radially outwardly adjacent to the scraping ring (20). The sealing ring (22) directly engages and seals between the cylinder head (14) and the distal end (44) of the cylinder liner (16).
