Apparatus and a method for digitally recording a program are disclosed. The apparatus comprises a memory (55) for digitally storing a program. The apparatus also comprises a means (145) for controlling at least one of, (a) whether to record a program in said memory (55); and (b) whether to retrieve a program stored in said memory (55). The determination in cases (a) and (b) is based, at least in part, on a parental control rating assigned to at least a portion of the program.
