Disclosed is a method for operating a metal bar press, particularly a horizontal metal bar press, comprising a block feeder which feeds a block that is to be pressed into a block receiver, to which a matrix is assigned. According to the inventive method, a front piece of the end of the block, which faces the matrix, is cut off before said block is inserted into the block feeder.
