The invention provides a process for the production of a fluoropolymer having a high molecular weight and a narrow molecular weight distribution. A process for the production of a fluoropolymer by continuous polymerization of a radical-polymerizable monomer in a specific reaction field, characterized in that the specific reaction field is in a supercritical state having a pressure of 40Mpa or below and a temperature lower than the lowest temperature at which the specific reaction field exhibits a supercritical state plus 100°C, that the radical -polymerizable monomer is a fluoroolefin monomer, and that the fluoropolymer has a weight-average molecular weight [Mw]in terms of polystyrene of 150,000 or above and an [Mw]/[Mn] ratio exceeding 1 and up to 3 (wherein [Mw] is as defined above and [Mn] is a number-average molecular weight in terms of polystyrene).
