A process for the polymerization which comprises polymerizing batchwise at least one gaseous or super-critical fluorinated olefin monomer or a monomer mixture of the olefin monomer with other monomer copolymerizable with the olefin monomer in an aqueous medium while diffusing the olefin monomer or monomer mixture into the medium, wherein the quantity of the monomer or monomer mixture diffused in the medium prior to the polymerization is at least 80 % of the theoretical consumption of the monomer or monomer mixture which must be found if the polymerization occurs at a theoretical rate of polymerization. The process can attain a high rate of polymerization with the rate of polymerization being determined not by the diffusion of the monomeric gas.

After a melt-processable fluorine-containing copolymer is heated and molten, the copolymer is reheatd in a closed apparatus under a non-static condition at a temperature of, for example, 130 DEG C to the melting point of the fluorine-containing polymer, whereby a content of volatile materials in the copolymer is reduced to 30 % or less of an initial content of volatile materials. Thereby, the content of volatile materials in the melt-processable fluorine-containing copolymer, which has been once molten, can be effectively decreased without using a large apparatus while avoiding the contamination of the copolymer with foreign particles.

A compound comprising an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal is added to a fluorine-containing polymer comprising a carboxylic aid terminal group or a terminal group capable of forming a carboxylic acid group through hydrolysis by heating it at a temperature of 200 °C or higher, in an amount of 0.1 to 10 %, in terms of the number of the metal atom for the alkali metal or the alkaline earth metal, in terms of the number of an ammonia molecule for an ammonia and in terms of the number of an ammonium group for a compound comprising an ammonium group, and the resultant mixture is heated at a temperature of 200 °C or higher in an atmosphere containing moisture. By this method, an unstable terminal group such as a carboxylic acid group and the discoloration owing to the group can be effectively removed, and further an unstable bonding in a main chain can be eliminated, so that the resultant fluorine-containing polymer has an amount of unpaired electrons on carbon atoms as small as 1.0x1013 spins/g or less, as measured by electron spin resonance measurement.

A method by which unstable groups of a melt-processable fluoropolymer can be stabilized rapidly and efficiently. The resultant stabilized polymer through melt molding gives a molded article free from not only air inclusions or voids but also discoloration. The method is characterized by melt-kneading a melt-processable fluoropolymer having unstable groups in a kneader having a stabilization zone satisfying the following requirements: (1) an oxygen-containing gas is present in the stabilization zone and (2) water is present in that zone. Preferably, (3) the absolute pressure in the zone is regulated to 0.2 MPa or higher; or (a) an oxygen-containing gas is present in the zone in an amount sufficient to enable the stabilized fluoropolymer to have a carbon radical spin number of 5x1013 spins/g or smaller as determined by electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy at a temperature of 77 K and (b) water is present in that zone.

A fluorocopolymer which comprises structural units derived from tetrafluoroethylene, hexafluoropropylene, and at least one perfluoro(alkyl vinyl ether) represented by the formula CF2=CFO(CF2)nCF3 (wherein n is a number of 0 to 3) in a ratio of (75-92)/(8-20)/(0-5) by weight and which has a melt flow rate (372 DEG C; load, 5,000 g) of 10 to 35 g/10 min and a die swell of 5 to 20%. The copolymer has excellent high-speed moldability. When used in high-speed extrusion molding for electric-wire coating, the copolymer can be applied to an electric wire without suffering or causing melt fracture or diameter fluctuation.
