The invention relates to a method and a device for spinning and crimping a synthetic thread. According to the invention a bundle of filaments is spun from a polymer melt and is compressed to form a thread plug. The thread plug is guided and cooled at a cooling speed in a moving cooling groove inside a cooling section and is disentangled after the cooling process to form the crimped thread, the latter being wound into a bobbin. The aim of the invention is to cool the thread plug sufficiently to obtain the highest possible degree of crimping in a stable thread. To achieve this, according to the invention, the length of the cooling section and the cooling speed of the thread plug are selected in such a way that the thread plug is cooled in the cooling groove for at least 1 second. The width of the inventive cooling nut is dimensioned in such a way that the thread plug can be guided in a meandering manner in the form of several superposed layers.
