The invention relates to an intervertebral implant (1) comprising two carrier plates (4, 6) for arranging on adjacent vertebral bodies, with a convex, bulged, articulated surface (15) on one carrier plate, and a concave, bulged, articulated surface (14) on the other carrier plate, said articulated surfaces being flat against each other and thus supporting the carrier plates in a pivotable manner, and the highest or lowest point of the articulated surfaces being positioned between the rear edge (16) and the centre of the carrier plates. The aim of the invention is to achieve an introduction of force which is as homogeneous as possible from the carrier plates into the adjacent vertebral bodies. To this end, the convex articulated surface in the central region of the carrier plate extends on both sides of the central line of the carrier plate between the front edge (17) and the rear edge (16), approximately at the same distance, and projects further from the carrier plate on the end thereof facing the rear edge than on the end thereof facing the front edge.
