The invention relates to a machine tool comprising a protective cabinet and an illumination system with at least one discharge lamp (21) that is installed in the interior of the protective cabinet (10). The aim of the invention is to improve the illumination of the entire working chamber of the machine and the interior of the protective cabinet in relation to the conventional fluorescent tubes that are used. To achieve this, the discharge lamp is mounted on a wall (14) of the cabinet and is configured as a flat lamp (21) with a large surface area that emits light of a uniform luminance.
