A method for automatic frequency correction of an automatic frequency control loop of a wireless communication unit comprises in a first stage (500): receiving a first signal on a first physical channel; producing from the first signal a first frequency estimate; and determining whether the first frequency estimate (Δfk) is below a predetermined threshold (Set_Frequency2). The method further comprises, in a second stage (600) in response to determining that the first frequency estimate (Δfk) is below the predetermined threshold (Set_Frequency2): producing, from the first signal, first and second partial correlation values to be used in frequency correction (pc1, pc2); receiving a second signal comprising a beacon on a second physical channel, and deriving a channel estimate from the beacon. The method further comprises producing, from the derived channel estimate and first and second partial correlation values, a second frequency estimate; and performing frequency correction using the second frequency estimate.
