A preform (10) includes an airfoil stub (14) and a dovetail hub (16). The hub (16) first undergoes electrochemical discharge machining to form a rough dovetail (32). The airfoil stub (14) undergoes electrochemical machining to form an airfoil (18). The rough dovetail (32) then undergoes electrochemical discharge machining to form a rough tang (34). The rough tang (34) is finish machined to form a dovetail (20) extending from the airfoil (18) in a unitary rotor blade (12).
