The invention relates to a method for performing open-loop and closed-loop control of an internal combustion engine generator system (1000) having a number of internal combustion engine generator units (400) which can be connected to a distributor network and generate electrical power, and loads (200) which consume electrical power, wherein a unit (400) has an internal combustion engine (401, 402, 404 - 408) with a variable rotational speed and a generator (421 - 428), characterized by the steps: determination of a current operating state Z* of the internal combustion engine (401, 402, 404 - 408) of the at least one internal combustion engine generator unit (400); derivation of an operating state range ZB* which describes a load application capability L
