The method according to the invention and a correspondingly suitable device are used to make the controlling of machining processes more precise by means of force measurement at a pressing device (20) and/or force measurement at the machining tool. As a result of force measurement as close as possible to the point of engagement of the pressing tool (20) and/or machining tool with the rail (10), essential information for controlling the machining process can be obtained during the rail maintenance process. Said additional information makes energy-saving, and thus wear-optimized, machining of laid rails possible.
