The invention discloses a mail sorting machine (2) for flat items of mail (4), having a diverter (6), wherein the items of mail (4) are able to be clamped between transport belts (8) of a cover-belt system (10) and in this way are able to be transported to the diverter (6) and are selectively able to be transported away in one of two directions (12a, 12b), characterized in that the diverter (6) comprises two diverter wings (14a, 14b) that are able to be driven in a manner decoupled from one another. The present invention discloses a method by way of which a mail sorting machine (2) for flat items of mail (4) can be operated, characterized in that the diverter (6) comprises two diverter wings (14a, 14b) that are able to be driven in a manner decoupled from one another and are used to divert the items of mail (4).
