Abstract:
The present disclosure provides embodiments of an asphalt composition and methods of making that may include asphalt binder; a recycled polymer component; an epoxy-functionalized ethylene copolymer, the epoxy-functionalized ethylene copolymer having the formula E/X/Y/Z. E may be a copolymer unit —(CH2CH2)— derived from ethylene; X may be a copolymer unit —(CH2CR1R2)—, where R1 is hydrogen, methyl, or ethyl, and R2 is carboalkoxy, acyloxy, or alkoxy of 1 to 10 carbon atoms, present in from 0 to about 40 weight % of the copolymer; Y may be a copolymer unit —(CH2CR3R4)—, where R3 is hydrogen or methyl and R4 is carboglycidoxy or glycidoxy present in from 0 to about 25 weight % of the copolymer; Z may be a copolymer derived from comonomers including carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, acrylonitrile, or other monomers, present from 0 to about 10 weight % of the copolymer.
