An apparatus configured to display a 3D image comprises a 3D display system. The 3D display system is configured to display a 3D data set in the form of a real-time 3D image, and to display a haptic tool having a virtual lens configured to navigate through the 3D data set to generate a cross sectional image of the 3D image in a virtual-reality environment.
