It is an object of the present invention to provide an ink jet printing apparatus that can print high quality images under simple control. The present invention includes a conveying roller disposed upstream of a printing section to convey a print medium, a pinch roller that rotates in cooperation with the conveying roller and discharging rollers that convey the print medium downstream of the printing section. The pinch roller, before a trailing end of the print medium reaches a nip portion between the conveying roller and the pinch roller moves from a pressure contact position with respect to the conveying roller. A conveyance amount of the print medium varies between before and after separation of the pinch roller from the conveying roller.
