A display area is formed by the pair of substrates, the modulation layer and the spacers, and includes a plurality of pixels arranged in rows and columns of a matrix. The spacers are arranged between adjacent pixels in the column direction so that an area density of the spacers continuously changes from an edge portion to a predetermined portion in the display area extending in the row direction.
