A subject-matter of the invention is a composition comprising a) at least one ortho-diphenol derivative, b) at least one specific metal derivative and c) at least one basifying agent, a method for dyeing keratinous fibres by treatment of the said fibres using the ingredients a), b) et c) and the use thereof for dyeing keratinous fibres.This hair dyeing method makes it possible to obtain better colorations which are more uniform, chromatic and lasting and which do not detrimentally affect the cosmetic properties of the keratinous fibres, starting from an extract of ortho-diphenols which are in particular natural.
