Described herein are technologies related to technologies for learning a route being traveled by a mobile device based upon 1) detection of ambient identifiable wireless signal (IWS) sources while the device is traveling the route and 2) assistance from centralized or network resource. The network assistance may, for example, provide information from other devices that has traveled the same route or part of the same route before. Consequently, the route is learned much faster than it would be otherwise.
