Concepts and technologies disclosed herein are directed to the opportunistic creation of bimodal avatar groups. According to one aspect disclosed herein, a virtual assistant executed by a processor of a user device, can receive an event invitation. The event invitation can identify an event to which a user associated with the user device is invited. The virtual assistant can provide an event RSVP in response to the event invitation. The event RSVP can indicate whether the user plans to attend the event. The event RSVP can also indicate whether the user plans to attend the event in-person or virtually. The virtual assistant can obtain an avatar associated with the user. The avatar can include user identity information that uniquely identifies the user for the event. The virtual assistant can assist the avatar in joining an avatar group that includes a plurality of avatars, including the avatar of the user.
