Abstract:
A combined active and passive heat exchanger may include an electrically conducting portion, a first heat conducting portion having a first set of one or more pin fins couplable to the electrically conducting portion, a phase-change material portion couplable to the first heat conducting portion and configured to change physical states upon heat absorption, a second heat conducting portion couplable to the PCM portion via a second set of one or more pin fins, a coolant portion couplable to the second heat conducting portion, with a thermal spacer optionally positioned between the PCM portion and the coolant portion. The combined active and passive heat exchanger is configured to provide active and passive cooling to an electric vehicle charging handle or an electric vehicle inlet. Examples of such charging handles are also described for both alternating and direct current charging configurations and configurations that use both current types.
