Nonlinear interaction of optical waves is achieved in a thin film waveguide by exciting appropriate modes of the waves to be interacted whereby phase matching is achieved in the substrate between the evanescent fields of the waves. The desired modes are excited by use of internal-reflection prism coupling in the manner described in copending application Ser. No. 793,696 filed Jan. 24, 1969.
