Billet handling and treating apparatus wherein successive billets emanating from a billet-spotting station are supplied to and stacked upon a charge table from which they are withdrawn, one at a time and deposited upon a manipulating car which conducts them to a grinding station for treatment. While the billets are being withdrawn from the stack, the charge table continues to be supplied with fresh billets which are formed into a reserve stack. When the original stack is exhausted, the reserve stack moves into position for withdrawal of the billets and the formation of another stack is initiated. Such billet stacking and withdrawal of billets is continuous so that at no time is there a lack of billets for the grinding operation.
