THE INVENTION CONCERNS A NOVEL CLEAVAGE PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF 6-AMINOPENICILLANIC ACID, WHICH COMPRISES CONTACTING A PENICILLIN OF THE FORMULA:
6-(R-CO-NH-),2-(HOOC-),3,3-DI(CH3-)PENAM
WHEREIN R IS PHENOXYMETHYL, P-CRESOXYMETHYL OR NBUTOXYMETHYL, OR AN ALKALI METAL SALT OF SAID PENICILLIN, WITH PENICILLIN AMIDASE PRODUCED BY CULTURING UNDER AEROBIC CONDITIONS BOVISTA PLUMBEA (NNRL 3501) OR A MUTANT OR VARIANT THEREOF IN AN AQUEOUS MEDIUM CONTAINING ASSIMILABLE SOURCES OF CARBON AND NITROGEN.
