Disclosed is 4-(hydrazonomethyl)benzoic acid hydrazide having the structure ##STR1## This compound can be prepared from methyl formyl benzoate and hydrazine. This compound can be prepared into a polymer by condensation with difunctional acid chlorides. Films of the polymer have unobviously high tensile and tear strengths without the necessity of biaxially orienting the film.
