A pre-fogged direct positive silver halide emulsion comprising silver halide grains which have been formed in the presence of a compound represented by the following formula (I):R--SO.sub.2 --M (I)wherein R represents an aliphatic group, an aromatic group or a heterocyclic group, and M represents a hydrogen atom or a cation. The invention also relates to a method for making such a photographic material.
