The lead wire has a first end contained within the oxygen sensor and a second end outside the oxygen sensor, the lead wire comprising an electrically insulating wall portion having passage means for providing enhanced fluid communication between the interior of the sensor and the exterior thereof. According to preferred embodiments, such passage means comprises a bore or a passageway in the insulating wall portion.
