This invention provides novel compounds that are effective as inhibitors of caspase and cellular apoptosis. The invention also provides methods for using the compounds to treat caspase-mediated diseases in mammals. The compounds have the general formula I: wherein X is F or Cl; R1 is COOH, COO(alkyl), or an isostere thereof; and R2 is an aryl group.
