An array of the pixel EL elements are formed on the front surface of a multilayer substrate, the rear surface of which mounts thereon a drive IC and the plurality of pixel circuits. The electrodes of the drive IC are connected to the anode and cathodes of the pixel EL elements through via holes and interconnects formed in the multilayer substrate.
