A driving circuit of a display to display full color by light emitting elements is provided which can attain sufficient display characteristics even when there is a difference in characteristics of the light emitting elements and can lower power consumption. The driving circuit is used for a stripe type display in which electrical characteristics of a red light emitting organic EL (Electroluninescence) element differ greatly from those of green and blue light emitting organic EL elements in which these three light emitting elements are arranged repeatedly in a column direction in a manner that the red light emitting element is sandwiched by the green and blue light emitting elements and the driving circuit is made up of driving sections each having driving capability enough to drive the red light emitting organic EL element and other driving sections each having driving capability enough to drive the green and blue light organic EL elements.

The image display device of the present invention comprises a plurality of stripe-like data electrodes, a light emitting layer, and a plurality of stripe-like scanning electrode formed on a substrate in sequence, and further comprises a image display portion formed by a plurality of light emitting elements in a matrix form at crossing points between said data electrodes and said scanning electrodes, and a column driving circuit and a row driving circuit for driving said image display portion by selecting and lighting the light emitting elements: wherein the row driving circuit has a function to simultaneously drive more than two of said scanning electrodes and successively lighting the horizontal regions in sequence corresponding to the number of scanning electrodes for simultaneously driving said light emitting elements; and the column driving circuit has a function to control a current flowing in said data electrodes such that a current density of said light emitting element is maintained at constant.

This scan voltage causes M rows and N columns of switching elements to turn on one column at a time, and accordingly, (M×N) data voltages that are applied from the M rows of data lines are individually held by M rows and N columns of voltage holding means. In accordance with these held voltages, M rows and N columns of drive transistors apply a drive voltage that is constantly applied to power supply electrodes to (M×N) organic EL elements. The M rows and N columns of organic EL elements are accordingly actively driven and a multiple gray-scale dot matrix image is displayed. However, conduction control elements halt the application of the drive voltage to the M organic EL elements of the nth column immediately before the scan voltage is applied to the scan line of the nth column. As a result, conduction to the organic EL elements is halted instantaneously even when an image of the same luminance is continuously displayed, thereby extending the life of the organic EL elements.
