A reproduction apparatus for reproducing data from a recording medium having several tracks each used for recording image data and one or more pieces of edit data includes an input unit for inputting the data from the recording medium, an analysis unit for identifying the recording track type of the input data, a storage unit for storing a priority-level assignment table associating the track types with priority levels for a decoding process, and for storing a predetermined threshold value serving as a border between the priority levels for data to be reproduced and the priority levels for data not to be reproduced, a plurality of decode units each used for decoding a different type of data, and a priority-level determination unit for determining whether the input data is to be decoded based on the track type identified by the analysis unit, the priority level assigned to the input data and the threshold value, and for outputting the input data to one of the decode units selected in accordance with the type of the input data when decoding the input data.
