The invention relates to a device (1) for producing strands (51) from round wood, wherein the strands (51) are 200 to 350 mm long in the direction of the fibers, 0.5 to 3 mm wide perpendicular to the direction of the fibers and 15 to 40 mm thick. The device comprises a rotating chip remover (22) for cutting the strands out of the round wood. Preferably, the chip remover (22) is provided with a plurality of interspaced blades (30), each of which has a substantially radially directed cutting edge (31) for cutting out said strands. The chip remover (22) also has a gap (47) in the cutting edge area, which leads to an intermediate area (49) acting as a chip space. The device has first means (33, 60; 33', 60) assigned to the intermediate area for catching the strands and second means (70, 80) for catching large pieces which fail to enter the intermediate area.
