Abstract:
A detection system for a cutting torch for use in connection with a workpiece. The detection system has an electrode (4) and a tip (6). A housing (outer sleeve OS) supporting the tip (6) and the electrode (4) provides relative movement therebetween and allows electrical contact between the tip (6) and the electrode (4). A sensor circuit (400) senses when the electrode (4) and the tip (6) are in electrical contact. The sensor circuit (400) generates a switch control signal (415) when the electrode (4) and tip (6) are in electrical contact. A power supply (200) provides a first voltage (low output) and a second voltage (high output) such that a potential voltage difference is established between the electrode (4) and the workpiece (26). A magnitude of the first voltage is less than a magnitude of the second voltage. A first switch (k1) selectively provides the second voltage to the electrode (4) in response to the switch control signal (415) whereby the potential voltage difference between the electrode (4) and the tip (6) and/or workpiece (26) corresponds to the second voltage when the switch control signal (415) indicates that the electrode (4) and tip (6) are in electrical contact.
